Scientists Show Us The Complete Dinosaur Embryo, Teaching Us About How Dinosaurs Grew!

Hey there, science enthusiasts! Get ready to dive into an amazing discovery that’s like something out of a movie. Discovering a perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo snugly hidden in a storage closet of a Chinese museum is like stumbling upon a hidden treasure in the world of prehistoric wonders!

Back in 2015, scientists unearthed this little marvel, and it had been quietly waiting in the wings for over a decade. 

This dino egg, belonging to the oviraptorosaur species (think ostrich but with feathers), goes by the adorable name “Baby Yingliang.” And get this – it’s about 72 million years old, taking us way, way back to the Cretaceous period.

Baby Yingliang’s Tale

In 2000, at Shahe Industrial Park, scientists found this tiny wonder. Now, it’s chilling (well, technically freezing) at the Yingliang Stone Natural History Museum in Nan’an, China. 

Despite being a mere 27cm long, Baby Yingliang is a big deal because it’s one of the most complete dino embryos ever found.

What makes Baby Yingliang extra special? Well, not just its size but also its cool posture. 

A recent study conducted by the University of Birmingham and China University of Geosciences revealed that Baby Yingliang exhibited a bird-like posture known as “tucking,” wherein the head is positioned below the body, the feet are on the sides, and the back is curled along the egg’s blunt end. 

It’s like a dinosaur yoga pose!

Connecting the Dots Between Dinosaurs and Birds

Why does this matter? Because Baby Yingliang’s yoga moves hint at a connection between dinosaurs and modern birds. Professor Steve Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh was blown away, calling Baby Yingliang “one of the most beautiful fossils I have ever seen.” 

According to him, this dino embryo looks just like a baby bird chilling in its egg, proving that features of today’s birds first evolved in their dino ancestors.

Fion Waisum Ma, a PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham, said, “We are very excited about the discovery of ‘Baby Yingliang’ – it helps us answer a lot of questions about dinosaur growth and reproduction.” 

Turns out, Baby Yingliang’s pose is similar to a chicken embryo’s, giving us cool insights into how dinos grew and behaved before hatching.
